Summer dress by namfesis Summer dress by namfesis
'Summer dress makes you more beautiful than the rest
lovliest girl that i know, and the sweetest
spends her life inside, she thinks she isn't blessed

summer dress separates you from the rest
easiest days of her life have been spent
wonders if she is loved, if she is missed

says a prayer as she's kissed by ocean mist
takes herself to the sand and dreams...'

Lyrics by Red house Painters, I've never really heard the song, but I love its lyrics. This is an entry for the ballpoint club competition 'SUMMER TIME'.
My idea was to show a girl wearing a blue dress, made of water (it reminds me of the sea) with designs like mermaids, fishes, ice-cream cones and more... The basic colors od my sunthesis are orange and blue, a contrast, but still, this is summer!!!

This piece is truly beautiful. I loved the way you mixed media, my favourite mix too, watercolour and ink! The detailing on her dress is wonderfully done. But my favourite detail, is that you didn't opt to render her face realistically, but instead found your own particular style of drawing faces. And it works! Because art is drawing things the way we envision them, not the way they 'really' are. So, kudos to you!

very neat style (and i love the color blue, works nicely here!) theres something about the eyes/forehead that doesn't seem right, maybe a bit too big - but overall, the entire piece is pretty cool! :)

Thanks! I went with the pen without making a sketck first, and yes, the forehead turned out kind of bigger than I imagined

yeah, that happens sometimes - one of the sketches i did of my daughter about 2 christmas's ago, her eyes went bug out huge....*blink* i'm still not sure how i did it. or how i didn't even see it till my husband complained. my aunt figured i'd done it on purpose to stylistically exagerate her being a child, since the eyes ARE bigger in a childs face then normal. lol...

needless to say, that sketch is NOT on my DA.
i don't think. i've gone through weird phases for stuff before and found i put stuff up on DA that i didn't think i had already...*shakes head*

Lol!!! I know! That happens to me a lot! You need someone to tell you what's wrong! Even if you know there is something that doesn't fit you can't tell what, until someone shows you, and then you think How didn't I come to see it myself? ;)

unfortunatly, my usual style of art (aka, anything with people that isn't pencil sketches) my husband doesn't like, so i can't get him to actually look at any of my art objectively...so then i come to DA bearing these pieces in the hopes of people helping me figure it out! lol

Don't woryy, men don't get the point most times anyway! I always ask my mother for my work. I don't know why, but she always tells me what she likes and what not, even if she doen't get excited by my style... Whenever I tried to ask anyone alse, I ended up fighting with them! It's really weird! people who know you will either say it's fantastic and no critisism, or just say they don't undersatnd these 'thing'. I hate that!

agreed!

i used to be horrible at taking any kind of criticism, because my family always walked on eggshells around me. Either my father attempted to avoid the subject entirely (though that was on a case of writing) or they all just 'liked' everything that i did.

and then i got to college, and a lot of the criticism wound up being all the bad stuff and never the good. and everyone was like ' oh you can't take criticism? Stop drawing!"

and all i really wanted them to do was point out the good AND the bad - its like, people give you one extreme or the other...theres always something good about a piece if you actually take the time to look at it, and always something wrong too...so why can't people balance it out?

I know!!! It makes you feel like crap when someone tells you something bad about your work, even if you are not very enthusiastic about it, still, it took you time!
One day, my ex boyfriend asked me how I feel about my drawings, and then I figured out that if anything would happen to them like they get ripped or dirty, I may even start crying! He thought it was extremly weird, but it was then when I realised how much I want to create, no matter what others say. this is the only way we actually get to express the way we feel, even through a simple doodle, and no one can do the same thing as we did, because every piece is done differently, ina different mood etc...
I just wish people could realise that sometimes, you want to here critisism, not all the wrong things!

I can't believe there are no comments on this piece! I love the way you colored her dress, and the handling of all the little sprite mermaids is very well done. Normally people are horrible at puling off tiny figures, but I think they really add to and make the piece fun.

Thank you! When I use color I usually end up ruin everything... but tiny is my specialty! lol!
